North Carolina Online Resources: an Annotated List of NC Websites: Demographics

The North Carolina State Data Center (SDC) specializes in disseminating and assisting with interpretation of decennial census data. It adds value to census data products by displaying tables, graphics, and reports specific to North Carolina.

The most valuable Web resource for NC statistical data with: over 1300 data items from state and federal agencies; historical data and projections, 1960s to 2030; state, county, municipality, township, tract, block group, and block coverage; definitions and help screens; customized report capabilities; pre-formatted topic reports, including census profiles; continual updates incorporating newly released data.

This page, maintained by the State Library of North Carolina, was developed as a quick reference guide to demographic and statistical data for the state. The topics covered are arranged alphabetically by subject. For those overwhelmed by the size of LINC, this may be a good place to begin searching for information.

The State Data Center is a consortium of agencies cooperating with the US Bureau of the Census to provide the public with data about the state and its component geographic areas. The SDC lead agency is located in the Technology and Data Services Section of OSBM, where it provides extensive resources for retrieving statistical information.

he State Demographics unit is primarily responsible for producing population estimates and projections. The annual estimates of the population of North Carolina counties and municipalities are used in the distribution of state shared revenues to local governments. County and state population projections, available by age, race (white/other) and sex, are used for long range planning. To produce these estimates and projections, the unit develops and enhances complex mathematical computer models, and collects and reviews a variety of data from federal, state, and local government sources. It annually surveys North Carolina municipalities for annexation data, municipalities and counties for selected institutional data, and military bases for barracks population data. As a member of the Federal State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates (FSCPE), the unit collects and examines data for the Census Bureau and reviews Census Bureau estimates and methods.

The State Data Center (SDC) Program is one of the Census Bureau's longest and most successful partnerships. The partnership between the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the island areas and the Census Bureau was created in 1978 to make data available locally to the public through a network of state agencies, universities, libraries, and regional and local governments.The SDC lead organization is appointed by the Governor of each state/commonwealth, Puerto Rico, island area (American Samoa, Guam, The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Virgin Islands) or the Mayor of the District of Columbia. In 1988 the Business and Industry Data Center Program (BIDC) was added to meet the needs of local business communities for economic data. It provides businesses with education and access to Census Bureau data and products in addition to statistical resources.
