North Carolina Online Resources: an Annotated List of NC Websites: Coastal and Marine

The NOAA Coastal Services Center works to protect coastal resources and keep communities safe from coastal hazards by providing data, tools, training, and technical assistance.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce, this site provides access to over 20,000 charts, maps, and other navigational aids to "...aid domestic and global commerce, promote safe and efficient marine and air transportation, and add to our understanding of the world's oceans." A search interface is provided to assist users in quickly locating the resources they seek.

The Division of Coastal Management works to protect, conserve and manage North Carolina's coastal resources through an integrated program of planning, permitting, education and research.

The Division of Marine Fisheries is dedicated to ensuring sustainable marine and estuarine fisheries and habitats for the benefit and health of the people of North Carolina.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort and the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport each offer unique exhibits and programs designed for all ages. See relics pulled from the deep, build a boat, follow Civil War battles fought along the coast, cast a line and learn about the state’s seafood industry, sail or paddle along waterways, and retrace Blackbeard’s voyages and ultimate demise.

NOAA’s array of nautical chart formats are available as free downloads or as value-added products from maritime product providers. NOAA nautical publications and data portals are easily accessible and provide important information to supplement the nautical charts.
