North Carolina Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program is part of a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. While the program's primary objective is to generate a reliable set of criminal statistics for use in law enforcement administration, operation, and management, its data have over the years become one the country's leading social indicators. The American public looks to Uniform Crime Reports for information on fluctuations in the level of crime, while criminologists, sociologists, legislators, municipal planners, the press and other students of criminal justice use the statistics for varied research and planning purposes.

North Carolina Department of Correction's homepage provides links to prisons, community corrections offices, and the parole commission. Users can use the site to search for registered sex offenders, crime statistics, victim services, and transition services.

The department focuses citizen and legislative attention on law enforcement and public safety issues, such as the supervision of offenders in prison or in juvenile detention centers and in community supervision, drinking and driving, underage access to alcohol and tobacco, the proper use of child safety seats, crime prevention, and preparation for natural disasters.

In addition to natural disasters, the department is constantly updating plans and providing training for local officials to respond to emergencies such as terrorism, communicable diseases, nuclear power plant incidents and civil unrest.

This agency serves as the coordinating agency for North Carolina's homeland security preparedness.

The Attorney General is the head of the North Carolina Department of Justice. The Governor's Crime Commission (GCC) has 44 members, including heads of statewide criminal justice and human service agencies, representatives from the courts, law enforcement, local government, the General Assembly, and private citizens.

The GCC sets program priorities, reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Governor for the state's criminal justice and juvenile justice federal block grants. Federal block grants are awarded each year to government, education, and social service agencies to start new and innovative programs.
