North Carolina Online Resources: an Annotated List of NC Websites: Arts & Architecture

This is the homepage for the statewide AIA, and information on the site is arranged by location. The site offers group news, activities, membership information, and employment links. There is also a feature at the bottom of the page that searches for architects by region, types of buildings they design, and services offered.

This site offers up information on the activities of the Center located in Brevard, North Carolina. In addition to hosting many performances throughout the year, the Center also sponsors a seven-week music camp for young musicians culminating in a yearly music festival. The site includes a calendar for upcoming performances.

Performance listings and summaries can be found on this site. It also provides a link to ticket sales for performances held by the department.

This group, based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is dedicated to "works written for the operatic stage in English." The current year's performance schedule and ticket information is provided, along with reviews of past performances. Group news can be found on the site, also.

Developed and maintained by North Carolina State University, this biographical dictionary highlights architects and builders who have produced North Carolina's architecture for more than 300 years. A brief biography plus a building list traces each person's work in the state. This is a growing website, with many more entries still to be added.

The North Carolina Arts Council "celebrates those who create and enjoy art in all 100 counties of the state.” Website information includes an arts directory, arts education, places to go and things to see, newsroom, and grants and services.

The NC Board of Architecture site offers links to legislative news, licensing information, and the group's newsletter.

The NC Department of Cultural Resources' website provides links to state museums' and historic sites homepages. A interactive NC map provides visitors direct access to specific regions of the state.

The NCFI, with the support of the North Carolina Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, has been an important resource in the documentation and presentation of the traditional music, craft, storytelling, dance, and other expressions of our state's remarkably rich folk heritage. The Institute's site includes news, an events calendar, travel guides, and links to other folklife oriented programs and information sources.

The NCHC strives to "bring North Carolinians together to make sense of this world we share." They pursue this mission through sponsorship of programs that examine "...what we value, how we relate to each other, how we cope with change and how we express ourselves. The site offers information on NCHC sponsored grants, publications, programs, and links nationwide humanities councils.

North Carolina Opera's website offers a performance calendar and ticket information along with past performance and audience surveys. The company is based in Raleigh.

The Symphony's home page offers links to not only information on upcoming performances and ticket information, but also to outreach and educational programs sponsored by the group. The North Carolina Symphony is based in Raleigh, and is comprised of over 65 full time members.

Opera Carolina's website offers a wealth of information including an "Opera 101" primer for those unfamiliar with the art form. Visitors to the site can also browse for upcoming performances and purchase tickets online. The group is based in Charlotte.

Founded in 1939, Preservation North Carolina is North Carolina's only private nonprofit statewide historic preservation organization. Its mission is to protect and promote buildings, landscapes and sites important to the diverse heritage of North Carolina.

Raleigh Symphony Orchestra's website offers descriptions of performances for the upcoming season as well as ticket and price for private performances. The company is based in Raleigh.

For four decades, the State Historic Preservation Office in the Office of Archives and History has conducted North Carolina's statewide architectural survey program. The Preservation Office sponsors and co-sponsors, assists and guides dozens of local and regional architectural surveys throughout the state--all part of the statewide program whose mission is to identify, record, and encourage the preservation of North Carolina's rich and varied historic and architectural heritage.

For each community and county, as for the state and nation as a whole, creating a photographic and written record of historic places is the first, crucial step in recognizing, valuing, and preserving the heritage of the past for the benefit of the present and the future. Each survey project provides a local base of information about community history and architecture.
