Federal Public Access Policy Compliance: Creating a New Biosketch in SciENcv

Creating a New Biosketch

1. Log in to NCBI

To access the SciENcv interface and create a Biosketch, it is necessary to have a NCBI account.

 - Go to the NCBI website (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/).

- Click on "Log in" at the top right corner. There are various methods to sign in to your NCBI account. You can use your ECU credentials to log in by clicking "more login options".

- If you don’t have an account, you can create one.

2. Access SciENcv

Once logged in, click on your account name in the upper right hand corner to access your dashboard. You can find SciENcv in the bottom right hand corner of your dashboard. If you have created biographical sketches within the system, you should see those listed. If not, you can start a new Biosketch by clicking the hyperlink "Click here" in SciENcv section.

3. Create a new Biosketch

To start your Biosketch, you will need:

1) Enter a name for your new document. The name should be meaningful to help you identify this document.

2) Select a document format. Each agency/grant type has a standardized layout for their required Biosketch. Choose "NIH Biosketch" or any other relevant option based on your needs.

3) Choose data source.

There are three ways to create a professional profile in SciENcv:

SciENcv can automatically format Biosketches according to the specific requirements of various funding agencies, including NIH, NSF, and IES. You can find the specific agency's instructions for Biosketch in the profile information section.

4. Edit and delete your Biosketches

You can find all your existing Biosketches in your My NCBI account. To edit a Biosketch, click on its name to return to the profile page. To delete a Biosketch, click on "Manage SciENcv" to navigate to the SciENcv main page, where you can delete it.

5. Download SciENcv Biosketches

SciENcv biographical sketches can be downloaded in three formats: PDF, MS Word, and XML. You can select the download format on your Biosketch page.

Create your Biosketch through using external data source

Link your eRA Commons, NSF, or ORCID accounts to NCBI

NIH eRA CommonsNSF, and ORCID account holders who have linked their accounts to NCBI can populate their SciENcv Biosketches with the information stored in their eRA, NFS, or ORCID accounts. To link accounts to NCBI, click on your username on the NCBI header to access the Account Settings page.

Under "Linked Accounts," click "Add account" and search for the partner organization you wish to link to your NCBI account.

Your NCBI account can be linked to multiple partner organizations. After the accounts are linked, you should be able to access your My NCBI account while signed into your partner organization account, and SciENcv will automatically pull in the biographical data from your eRA Commons/ORCID/NSF accounts to populate your new Biosketch.

Create your Biosketch through making a duplicate of an existing document

If you have created Biosketches in SciENcv, you can select "Use an existing document" and then choose a previous biosketch as a template. SciENcv will generate a duplicate of the selected Biosketch.

Optional: Add delegates

You can grant access to other persons (delegates) to view and manage your SciENcv Biosketches. Once they have received your invitation, delegates will then be able to create, modify or delete the information in your SciENcv account.

To add a delegate:

- Log in to your NCBI account, and click on your username (top right corner of page) to access the Account Settings page

- Under “Delegates,” select “Add Delegate”

- Enter the delegate’s e-mail address, and click Save

- Your delegate will receive an e-mail with a URL that leads to an access confirmation page.

You can control what your delegates have access to by checking or unchecking the boxes under the MyBib or SciENcv columns in the Delegates section. Additionally, delegates can be removed by clicking on the trash can icon.
