Our manuscripts department contains letters, diaries, photographs, business records, genealogical notes, reports, speeches, oral histories and other unpublished material. Our collecting strengths include American military and naval history – especially the personal papers of servicemembers – from the 1840s to the present. We also collect material related to other aspects of maritime history, including the records of 19th- and 20th-century shipbuilding firms. In addition, we acquire and preserve the papers of American missionaries, personal papers and business records related to the tobacco industry, and material related to North Carolina history.
