Template Guide: Best Practices

Use this guide to begin all new LibGuides at Joyner Library

Note to LibGuide Creator

Delete this tab after reading.

This LibGuide has been created for everyone to use as a template. To use it, go to your Dashboard, then choose to Create a New Guide, then choose "Use an Existing Guide as a Template." Then rename it and proceed!

The guide has a few boxes that have been added that need to be removed by you. You'll have to ask the instructor the following questions:

  • Is this a Distance Education class?
  • Is this an Undergraduate or Graduate course?
  • What style guide do you use for citations?

Please consider the following best practices.

Best Practices for ECU LibGuides

  • Home should always be the first tab, Citation should be second to last and Get Help should always be the last tab. To reorder pages, go to Add/Edit Pages and choose Reorder/Move Pages.
  • Whenever possible, please try not to have more than a single line of tabs. You may try naming your tabs with shorter words in order to keep the size of the tabs down.
  • Please do not leave any empty columns in the LibGuide. You can remove a column by going in to Add/Edit Pages>Resize Columns.
  • Do not have the contact information on every single page. If you wish to include your contact box, please only put it on the last page, "Get Help"
  • Try to have most of the important information "before the fold," which means before the user has to scroll down.
  • The Home Tab and the Get Help tab should have a graphic. I have included some Google Doc links to embed codes for specific cartoons that I have created. Feel free to use these! You can add your own graphic, as well.
  • Please limit the amount of text that you use on the pages.
  • Structurally, the pages should normally have 2 columns, one that is larger and contains more important information, and one smaller column on the right for links boxes, images, and less important information.
  • Do not create a page with just one box on it. If you find yourself doing this, you may want to compile the single boxes in to one page with a generalized title.
  • Create a table of contents by linking each of the pages to the Home page. This helps students who do not see the tabs to learn that the LibGuide has tabs.
  • Rather than copying an image, which may become a broken link later, please right click on the image file, and go to Save As... Then choose somewhere on your computer (remember where!). I like the Desktop. You'll upload it to the LibGuide by going in to the text, choosing the picture icon (it looks like a tree) and selecting to upload a picture. Find the picture and upload it, then use it in the LibGuide. This ensures that the picture exists on the Springshare server, and not where you last saw it on the web. Sometimes pictures get taken down!
  • Only use non-copyrighted pictures. You can find these via Flickr Creative Commons.
  • Make sure that the links you use are live and active. Do not link to old tutorials, or the old chat links. Check old guides for this, as well!
  •   Follow these examples of naming conventions

  • Subjects:
  • o   Liguides.ecu.edu/anthropology

    o   Libguides.ecu.edu/classical_studies

    o   Libguides.ecu.edu/rec_leisure
