Use this page to get started on questions about finding books.
The first hint is, you will find books in the catalog. Use the catalog's advanced search for many of the questions asking you to find books.
There are many books containing Hispanic American and Latin American stories in the PQ section, but you will still need to use the catalog to search.
Try searching by subject.
For questions that mention a specific author, search the catalog by author.
You will use the limiters in the dropdown boxes near the bottom of the advanced search, including Broad Material Type, Location, Publication Year, Language, and more.
You will need to cite your sources. MLA style may be reviewed on the Citation Guide tab.
Search Results
Whenever you do a search, be sure to record the entire call number and the location of the material.
Retrieving your Book
Now that you have a call number and location, you can find the book in the library. Check out the floor maps to learn more.
Reading a Call Number
Once you're in the correct collection, use the call number to locate your book.
Joyner Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system to assign call numbers to most of its materials. LC call numbers start with one or more letters (A-Z). The first letter represents the broad subject assigned to an item; subsequent letters and numbers identify it more precisely. Here is a video on Understanding Call Numbers.
Borrowing/Checking Out your Materials
You can check out books and DVDs using your ECU OneCard at the main circulation desk, which is located near the first floor entrance.
The library catalog is where you can search for books, videos, DVD's, etc.
Use InterLibrary Loan and Document Delivery services to request articles, books, media, and more from other libraries when ECU libraries do not have what you need.
You may search the library catalog for items housed in Joyner Library. You may search by keyword, title, author, or subject. Conduct a subject search in the library catalog for those subject headings which are appropriate for your class.
Also, try word or phrase searches such as: Note: By using an asterisk, all forms of a term will be searched. In this example, catalog returns will include pregnancy, pregnancies, etc. For assistance, please contact a librarian through the options listed under "get help."
