In the wake of violence against Black Americans and in a moment of national reckoning in Summer 2020, the HKS Library pulled together a reading list that is inspired and largely informed by Resources and Reading on Racial Justice, Racial Equity, and Anti-Racism published by the Institutional Anti-Racism and Accountability Project (IARA) at the Ash Center and in partnership with the HKS Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. This reading list is a starting place to find resources that speak to racial justice, racial equity, and anti-racism. A list of nonfiction books to help examine anti-Black racism and the fight for antiracism in The United States.

Hosted every April through Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research, the National Antiracist Book Festival highlights and celebrates the nation’s leading antiracist authors. The 2022 National Antiracist Book Festival was virtual, and panels were organized based on topic, each with authors and a moderator. In honor and celebration of Juneteenth, we’ve compiled a selection of books by Black authors from this year’s Antiracist Book Festival. Whenever possible, we highly encourage you to shop local and support Black-owned businesses. If you’re in Boston, you can accomplish both of these goals by visiting Frugal Bookstore, Boston’s only Black-owned bookstore. To make it easier for you to find books that align with your interests, we’ve separated our selections into four categories: Activism, Memoirs, Fiction, and Systemic & Structural Racism.

Anti-racism is a priority for the U of M Libraries
Dean of the Libraries, Lisa German, said, "Antiracism is a journey, as Ibram X. Kendi tells us in How to Be an Antiracist, and we commit to identifying and addressing the ways white supremacy manifests itself throughout all aspects of librarianship. We must be accountable for this work. Our U Office for Equity and Diversity says: We all share responsibility for equity and diversity— it’s everybody’s everyday work. We are committed to making this a priority for the University of Minnesota Libraries."

As the demonstrations occurring across the country prove, free expression makes an important difference in affecting positive social change. We’ve created this reading list of comics addressing themes of anti-racism and the African American experience as a starting point to help parents and educators continue the important discussions in the days and weeks ahead.
