Literature Review: A Few Writing Tips

Describes what a literature review is and how to conduct a literature review

Writing Tips

  • Know your audience and write for them
    • If you are writing for people in your profession, you will want to use a professional voice
  • Take good notes
    • Keep a journal of what databases you searched and what keywords you used
    • Take notes of what articles are most relevant and what they have to say
  • Take notes as you read
  • Keep your review focused on your topic or question
  • Stick to a logical organizational structure
  • Have a friend read your rough draft.  A friend may see errors that you don't see.
  • Your paragraphs should not be individual summaries of different articles.  Be sure you synthesize the data.
  • Don't use too many quotes
  • Use headings and subheadings appropriately to organize information, especially in a long review
