Constructing a Citation

Here is how to format some of the most common types of citations in APA style.

 Article

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages. https://doi.org/xx.xxx/yyyy

Website

Lastname, F. M. (Year, Month Date). Title of page. Site name. URL

Book

Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle. Publisher Name. DOI (if available)

Government Report 

"Government Reports" Include technical and research reports, census statistics (in PDF format or in print), reports of task forces, etc. Format these reports as you would a book.  If there is no personal author, use the organization name.  

Lastname, F. M., & Lastname, F. M. (Year). Title of report. Organization Name. URL

Example 

United States Government Accountability Office. (2019). Performance and accountability report: Fiscal year 2019. https://www.gao.gov/assets/710/702715.pdf

Data Set

A "data set" includes raw data (which might be imported into a spreadsheet for further manipulation) or interactive data displays.  Inf there is no personal author, use the government agency as a corporate author.  

Lastname, F. M. or Name of Group (Year). Title of dataset (Version No.) [Data set]. Publisher. DOI or URL
