"The language of co-authorship, taken from OpenAI’s own terms and policies, can be useful in addressing the rise of AI writing in the classroom," writes Sean Ross Meehan in the January 30, 2023 issue of Inside Higher Education.
Meehan continues, "OpenAI recommends that authors (a.k.a. “humans”) acknowledge in a foreword the AI’s secondary, collaborative role. They offer a template that writers might adapt for a statement: “The author generated this text in part with GPT-3, OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model. Upon generating draft language, the author reviewed, edited, and revised the language to their own liking and takes ultimate responsibility for the content of this publication.”
Wise students provide citations for material used that was created by others (references in your research paper, bibliographies, etc. This can be challenging when AI is involved and you are less familiar with how to cite to AI. It is evolving, but here are some standard citation styles and how AI is currently being handled.
