Overview of Organizations

This page contains a list of organizations that provide information or support relating to topics of transgender health care.  Organizations are divided into the following categories.

Medical Health Organizations

WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health): An educational, professional, and research organization for transgender health.  They focus on developing evidence-based medicine, and they publish standards of care for individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria. 

GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality: The largest professional organization for LGBTQIA+ health care professionals. 

American Medical Association: The organization certifying health care providers.  Provides educational resources on LGBTQIA+ population care. 

NurseJournal – LGBTQ Training: An educational and professional organization for nurses.  Provides training and resources for nurses learning about LGBTQIA+ patient care. 

Association of LGBTQ+ Psychiatrists (AGLP): A professional organization of psychiatrists providing care for LGBTQIA+ patients. 

MedlinePlus LGBTQIA+ Health: MedlinePlus is a service of the National Library of Medicine and provides medically informed resources and information on health care topics of all kinds, including LGBTQIA+ population care. 

Point of Pride: A fund to connect transgender patients with health care devices and financial support to help them through transition. 

Mental Health Organizations

American Psychological Assocation: The leading United States organization for psychological resources, research, and information. 

National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network: Provides education about mental health care for queer and trans black, indigenous, and people of color. Also provides a directory to search for mental health providers. 

Society for Sexual, Affectual, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE – Division of American Counseling Association): Society focused on educating and connecting counselors working with LGBTQIA+ clients. 

Trans Lifeline: Provides a call line for mental health and financial support for transgender individuals in need. 

Trevor Project: Named after the 1994 short film, Trevor, this organization provides crisis services for and education about LGBTQIA+ youth. 

Psychology Today: Connects individuals with mental health providers by allowing clients to search for providers based on their personal needs. 

Additional Organizations that Support Trans Health Care

Human Rights Campaign (HRC): Provides education and resources about all LGBTQIA+ topics, such as a thorough glossary of terms relating to LGBTQIA+ topics. 

PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays): Provides education and resources about all LGBTQIA+ topics, including resources that may be helpful to family and friends of transgender individuals. 

Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE, previously National Center for Transgender Equality): An organization supporting and educating about legal and political rights of transgender individuals within the U.S. Also provides a health care project called the A4TE Health Project.

Campaign for Southern Equality: An organization working toward and educating about LGBTQIA+ rights in the southern U.S. 

National Coalition for LGBTQ Health: Researches and educates about evidence-based health for LGBTQIA+ individuals.   

GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation): A media source and advocate making national and local programs and focused on LGBTQ acceptance.
