Indigenous Religions: Find Books

This guide will help you find and cite resources related to indigenous religions around the word.

Finding Books

Books represent a large amount of the material housed in Joyner Library and online. Books can be found in the catalog.

On this page, you will find:

  • A tutorial teaching you how to search in the catalog
  • A link to the catalog with tips and information about finding print materials
  • A link to the eJournal and eBook portal
  • Information about Interlibrary Loan

Using the library catalog

Using the Catalog

Use the ECU Library Catalog.to search by author, title, subject, or a search phrase such as "Indigenous peoples AND religion."

The "Find materials by" column on the left side of the page will allow you to filter by library, format, publication date, among other options. For example to display results for print books only, select "Print" under "Format."

Understanding Call Numbers

Ebook titles will appear in search results with a link to the content. Print book titles will appear with a call number listed to help you find the book. Call numbers are used to describe the subject of a book or other work and they allow libraries to group materials together by subject.

To find a book by its call number, consider the letter(s) at the beginning first, then consider the numbers. The materials are arranged alphabetically, and then numerically by their call numbers. In the example above, you would find the "BL" section, then the BL2,000s.

Most of the general print items related to religion are on the second floor of the library in the BL section.

Placing a Hold

To avoid looking for books and other items in the library stacks by yourself, you can place a hold. To place a hold, click on the title you want to check out. Then click "Place Hold" on the bottom right. You will be prompted to login with your Pirate ID.

The library will notify you when it is time to pick up your hold at the circulation desk.

Using the eBook portal

Using the eBook and eJournal Portal

The eBook and eJournal and eBook Portal is located on the library home page and can be used to locate ebooks and ebook chapters as well as electronic journal articles and videos. When searching for a title or keyword, you can use the buttons at the top to limit your search results to the format(s) you are interested in.

You can also browse by title or by subject. This is a helpful feature because you can narrow down to a more specific subject, as shown in the example below.
