LIBS 6026 Organization of Information LibGuide: Library of Congress Subject Headings

This course provides an overview of guidelines for the description, coding, classification, and subject analysis for materials in a library collection.

Authority Control

  • Authority control is covered early in the course modules. Authority control is a process that organizes bibliographic information in library catalogs by using a single, distinct spelling of a name (access point or heading) or a subject for each topic.

Library of Congress Authorities

Use this resource to browse and view authority headings for Subject, Name, Title, and Name/Title combinations; and download authority records in MARC format for use in a local library system.

VIAF: The Virtual International Authority File

Combines multiple name authority files into a single OCLC-hosted name authority service. This service allows researchers to identify names, locations, works, and expressions while preserving regional preferences for language, spelling, and script.

Cultural Objects Name Authority & Iconography Authority (CONA & IA - Getty Institute)

CONA compiles titles, attributions, depicted subjects, and other metadata about works of art, architecture, and cultural heritage, both extant and historical, physical, and conceptual. Metadata is gathered and linked from museum collections, special collections, archives, libraries, scholarly research, and other sources.
