IX.       Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will:

           1.         Demonstrate a comprehensive review of the literature on a relevant nursing topic.

             2.         Synthesize the findings of the literature review and identify a gap(s) in existing knowledge.
           3.         Determine a research design to address the gap(s) in the literature.

            4.         Design a research proposal to address the gap(s) in the literature.

Writing Intensive (WI)

 NURS 3750 is a writing intensive course in the Writing Across the Curriculum Program at East Carolina University. This course will focus on the development of writing skills. Upon completion of the course students will:

  1. Use writing to investigate complex, relevant topics and address significant questions through engagement with and effective use of credible sources.

      2.  Produce writing that reflects an awareness of context, purpose, and audience, particularly within the written genres (Including               genres that integrate writing with visuals, audio or other  multimodal components) of their major disciplines and/or career fields.

  1. Demonstrate that they understand writing as a process that can be made more effective through drafting revision.

      4.  Proofread and edit their own writing, avoiding grammatical and mechanical errors.

      5.  Assess and explain the major choices that they make in their writing. This course contributes  to the twelve-hour WI                             requirement for students at ECU.

University Writing Portfolio Requirement:

This course is designated "writing intensive" (WI) because, in addition to providing you with important content to learn, it has been designed to help you improve as a writer.   As part of campus writing assessments, you will submit one major writing project, along with a description of the assignment for that project and brief responses to four questions about your writing, near the end of this course. These materials will be uploaded to your "University Writing Portfolio," which you will access and create (if you have not already done so in a previous WI course) through the "student portfolio" link in Pirate Port (https://pirateport.ecu.edu/portal/).

Additional information about creating your University Writing Portfolio and uploading your materials will be provided during the semester. Further assistance with this process is available online (www.ecu.edu/QEP) and in person at the University Writing Center (www.ecu.edu/writing/uwc), located in Joyner Library.

C.  Course Grade:

Learning Agreement -The course grade is based on a learning agreement between the mentor and mentee at the beginning of the semester. At minimum, each student should complete a literature review, a synthesis of the literature and a written proposal for the research project that will be carried out in the second course.

            The course grade is based on the following components:

  • Learning agreement with time line                              5%
  • Meeting with HSL Librarian                                         5%
  • Completion of the CITI Modules                                 5%
  • Literature Review (matrix method)                            20%
  • Prepare IRB proposal (submit if appropriate)            10%
  • Submit proposal for Undergraduate research award

XII.           Textbooks

Textbooks and required readings will vary based on the area of research and discussion with the mentor.  All students should use the latest published version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Society when writing their papers.

XIII.    Learning Environments and Activities:

  1. Student Accountability/Attendance- Refer to the Honors College Manual for student accountability requirement related to the Seniors Honors Project. 
  2.  Academic Integrity Each student is expected to maintain Academic Integrity (Refer to the ECU student government association documents: Academic Integrity Violations Section) http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/fsonline/customcf/facultymanual/newmanual/part4.pdf. All course work for grading is to be the individual work of the student. Academic integrity is a fundamental value of higher education and East Carolina University; therefore, acts of cheating, plagiarism, falsification or attempts to cheat, plagiarize or falsify will not be tolerated.
  3.  Outcome Measures – In order to receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) for this course, all outcome evaluation measures as assigned for the course shall be completed.  A grade of I (Incomplete) will be assigned in the course if all evaluation measures are not completed.
  4. Reference Books and Journal Articles- In general, references used in completion of course requirements must be from books and journals within the past 5 years.  Any questions regarding the appropriateness of a reference should be discussed with your research mentor.
  5. Continuity of Instruction Plan – In the event that classes are suspended by ECU due to a catastrophe event, we will strive to continue instruction to those that are able to participate.  If and when classes are suspended, contact your research mentor by email. Guidelines Research Proposal

This paper is an opportunity to synthesize the literature that you have been reviewing this semester and to propose a project that can be implemented during your second honors course. The paper should be 8-10 pages long and written in APA Format.

 

Background/Significance (1-2 pages) (15%)

This section should provide evidence that the problem you are interested in is important. You should use national, state, and/or local statistics as available. For example, if you are interested in improving infant mortality you can cite the national, state rate and then the county rate.  Give a brief interpretation of your statistics in terms of the cost of the problem to both to the individual and society.

 

Literature Review/Synthesis (3-5 pages) (30%)

Group your literature/studies according to similar categories and synthesize what these articles say about your topic of interest. For example, if you are interested in infant mortality and have read articles that look at the impact of population demographics, adequacy of prenatal care, availability of health care, etc. write about how these articles provide evidence related to your problem.  Provide a summary about whether you think that the evidence is strong, moderate, or weak based on the quality of the studies that you were able to find and review.

 

Research Questions/Aims (1 page) (15%)

Develop 2-3 research aims that you hope to address in your study. Be specific as to the question that you want to answer and the population that you want to work with. 

 

Methodology (2-3 pages) (30%)

The methodology for each project will be slightly different for each project. This is a general outline:

Study design: i.e. qualitative descriptive, correlational

Assessment/data collection

What data will you need to gather? Consider additional data you might need, resources in or knowledge that you need before you begin.   

Sample/setting

What are the characteristics of the sample that you wish to target? What might be some inclusion criteria? What about exclusion criteria?

  • Provide a brief description of the intervention that you plan to do. Try to be specific about how this intervention is related to the literature that you have reviewed.
  • How will you evaluate your project/analyze your data?
