Citation Management: Citation Management Software

Manage your works and find tools for managing the citations you collect to works written by other authors.


RefWorks is a subscription available via Laupus Library. This citation manager is excellent for importing large sets of citations, especially from subscription databases. There is a Word plug-in for creating in-text citations. Bibliographies are easily generated, and users can choose from hundreds of styles, create their own, or request that RefWorks add it.


Mendeley is an easy-to-use reference manager that will sync your PDF library across its Web version, your desktop version, and your iPad version. Upload PDFs and arrange them by folders. Share citations with others. Users can also join groups and view others' profiles. In-text citations are generated using a Word plug-in.



Zotero is an easy to use PDF and citation manager notable for two reasons: 1, ease of importing citations (especially using the Firefox extension) and 2, social features. The social features permit users to form groups and share citations quickly and easily with others. A Word plug-in enables easy citing while you write, and more than 6,000 citation styles are available. The web-based version of Zotero syncs quickly and easily with your desktop version. Third-party apps are available.

EndNote Basic

EndNote Basic is a citation manager similar to RefWorks. It works best as a companion to your desktop purchase of EndNote, especially for importing files of references. EndNote Basic is the software authors use to edit or add citations to their Research ID.
