P2P Challenge -- Are you up to the Challenge?

The Pirate to Pirate Mentoring Program (P2P) is excited to invite the ECU community to participate in the P2P Challenge.

The P2P Challenge, inspired by this year’s Pirate Read selection It Happened on the Way to War by Rye Barcott, is a 7-day challenge to raise awareness for social justice issues. It will take place Sunday, October 13 - Saturday, October 19. Each day will have a different challenge, and the list is below.

We invite members of the ECU community to participate each day, take pictures of their participation, and share them on our Facebook page. In addition to individuals, we challenge ECU organizations and classes to participate. Organization representatives can contact Hank Bowen for information on how we can work together.

Individuals and organizations that participate in all seven days will be recognized by the Pirate to Pirate Mentoring Program.

The Challenge

Day 1 – Sunday, October 13: Get together with a few friends to pick up trash in your neighborhood.

Day 2 – Monday, October 14: Don’t use your phone today. If you need to speak to someone, find them in person or borrow a phone from someone. Yes, this includes texting!

Day 3 – Tuesday, October 15: Try to live on $2 today.

Day 4 – Wednesday, October 16: Spend time with either a young person or an older person in your community.

Day 5 – Thursday, October 17: Take photographs or video of things you are proud of in your community and things that concern you in your community.

Day 6 – Friday, October 18: Volunteer a few hours with a community organization.

Day 7 – Saturday, October 19: Invest $26 in a local leader or organization that you believe in. Each individual could commit to raising $7, one for each day of the challenge, or small groups can work together to raise $26. (For information on the significance of the number 26, visit www.powerof26.org.) In conjunction with the visit on October 22 by Rye Barcott, author of It Happened on the Way to War, one suggestion for your donations is to Carolina for Kibera (CFK). More information on CFK can be found at http://cfk.unc.edu. You don’t have to do your fundraising on this day only, but we suggest you use this date as your deadline.

Obviously, some of these items will take some advance planning. Start thinking now about what you can do to make a difference in your community! In addition to these seven challenges, we also challenge everyone to tell others what the P2P Challenge meant to you, and to encourage them to take the challenge as well.

We also invite any participants to attend our P2P Group Social on Sunday, October 20 at 3pm in the Mendenhall Student Center Great Rooms. At this event, we will celebrate our accomplishments and discuss ways to make a difference in our communities.

We ask that anyone interested in participating join our Facebook event at https://www.facebook.com/events/544723308931166. And don’t forget to head to Wright Auditorium at 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 22 to hear Rye Barcott speak.
