The Sanborn Map Company's fire insurance maps show locations of and provide information about buildings, railroads, bridges, streets and other features of towns and cities within each county in the state. Maps are from the late nineteenth century into the twentieth century. Maps show textile mills in the towns and also the mill villages surrounding them. The Guide to North Carolina Newspapers on Microfilm shows if a newspaper was published in the town where a textile mill exists. Many newspapers carried articles proposing investments in new mills or references to existing ones.
